Beds are friggen expensive!!! JUST PUT ME OUT OF MY MISERY!!! **FINAL UPDATE**
FH and I just went to buy a new bed because the one we have now sucks moose balls, basically. We were looking for a queen size bed and I really didn't want to spend much more than $1000. I figure $1000 for something that is supposed to last for 20 years or more is a good investment. So what happens? We walk out of the store with a receipt for a king size bed for $2400!! We wound up financing $1500 of it (although at 0% interest for 12 months it's not such a bad thing). We won't have it until sometime next week because the warehouse is out of stock. It came with a 25 year warranty, but I can't help think that we just blew a major amount of money on a friggen bed! I know that it's supposed to be a worthwhile investment, but GAH!
Did anyone else spend as much money on a bed? Are we the only idiots who spent that much? I can't even imagine what bedding is going to cost us!

Re: Beds are friggen expensive!!!
We just bought a new king size as well. Spent over $3000! Ouch!!! But, I have a bad back and I have to tell you - I so love my new bed. I get better sleep and more of it with no more back pain. In the long run you will be very happy that you spent what you did on your new bed. Remember, 1/3 your life will be spent there!
All The Best!

Re: Beds are friggen expensive!!!
Wow, I don't feel so bad anymore. My bed is so bad now that I wake up and can barely stand up straight, or when I wake up in the middle of the night, I can barely sit when I need to tinkle (yeah, TMI, sorry). I'm hoping this one will do the trick.
What brand did you get, if I may ask?

Re: Beds are friggen expensive!!!
I can just see the new ad for your bed - the bed that helps you tinkle!
Sorry, I just had to do that.
This is the bed we bought.

FYI - all new beds have terrible chemicals that really smell. When you receive it don't put any sheets on it. Open all the windows in the room and let it air out as long as possible. Then the sheets etc.

My parents have a select comfort bed and my Mom was just telling me the other day that the only bad thing about them is you get so spoiled you can't stand to sleep in any other bed and you never want to leave home!

Spoiled, yes! Not leave home! Well, I wouldn't go that far. We have two kids. Can't wait to leave sometimes!
But the bed is the best I've owned.

Hey, I'm too young to have to hobble to the squat pot!
At least you get to adjust the level of comfort for all that money. Mine is what it is. Granted, it seems to be pretty darn comfy, but you never really know until you've spent a few nights on it.
We got the Aireloom Rip Van Winkle Inspiration. All of the Aireloom beds are hand-crafted and they've been around forever. I don't like the name of my bed, but if it makes me feel like I could sleep there forever, I'll take it!
Enjoy your bed, Ron and Liz!

Seriously, we buy all our beds at the Suffolk Discount Mattress Warehouse and they have king sized, pillow topped mattress sets for 600 bucks. We all have bought our beds from them in our family and we LOVE them! I guess too little info too late, sorry!

Re: Beds are friggen expensive!!!
I bought my bed from Sleepys... its a kingsdown double pillowtop.. The matress only was like 1300.00 (if I remember correctly) its a queen size.. But what most people dont know is you can haggle there.. I told them i would give them NO MORE than 800.00 and after a couple of "calls" we got it for the price we wanted.. then to save myself the 80.00 we went to the warehouse to pick it up.

Re: Beds are friggen expensive!!!
Well, I just saw an ad for my bed at Sleepy's for $500 less than what we paid, so I'm going to go back in there tomorrow and get them to bring the price down. Hell, we don't even have it yet, so it's not like it would be a big deal to go somewhere else and get it if they won't bring the price down any.
Thanks for the info!

That's what I say about Dowling, didn't care for that college too much. Every time I drive past it I say, "Dowling SMB and I don't have to go there anymore." I saw your post and my FH asked if you went to Dowling. Just found it very funny. Sorry, can't help with the bed issue.

I never heard anyone else say that! I didn't go to Dowling, but I hated, hated, hated the college I went to, so maybe it has something to do with hating our schools, rather than the particular school.

Re: Beds are friggen expensive!!!
Don't feel so bad... FH and I spent six thousand dollars on a bedroom set, without the king size mattress (after spending all of that money on the set we are using a crappy hand me down mattress)
The set is beautiful tho, and we rationalized it that since it's 100% wood it will probably last us 25 to 30 years, if not more.
2 tall end tables, king size sleigh bed, large long dresser with mirror, and a tall set of drawers.. I think they call it a bachelor piece.
So no, you're not nuts.
BTW the reason I'm up at 4:30 is not because the mattress is that crappy.. it's because my d@mn nose won't stop running and I can't stop sneezing!

Re: Beds are friggen expensive!!!
Thanks Jann.. just the proof I needed.. I keep telling Jim the bed is gonna be a butt load of cash.. and he's like "no way, youre nuts".
I threw $500 at a really bad Full sized matress and box spring.. god that thing was horrible. In less than two years you could FEEL the springs inside the mattress! After my knee surgery it became a hazard. To this day I never put weight on my bad knee when climbing into bed. Once i even scraped my good knee just getting into bed on one of those springs!!! i had this big red scrape and bruise.. from my BED and i was sleeping alone for creeps sake! And yes.. i did rotate and flip and all that jazz!
I hated it. Left it behind in my apt when I moved out.. told the roomie he can sell it or rent out that room furnished.
Oh.. and I bought it from Sleepy's.

Re: Beds are friggen expensive!!! UPDATED with a new vent!
Ronie, I got my last one from Rockaway Bedding. That was a nightmare and a half (I had no phone yet the day my bed was delivered and my doorbell didn't work so I had to sit and watch out my window for the 4 hour period that they were supposed to be there - they didn't show up for 10 hours!!!) and the bed sucked. I only paid about $300 for it (after they gave me about $100 off the price for making me wait), and it's true that you get what you pay for.
You would have been proud of me today, though. I went to Sleepy's and spoke to a different salesman than on Friday, and this guy was the most incompetent yutz I've ever known. My bed was $2300 and the salesman gave us 10% off of that on Friday. The ad said that my bed was on sale for $1799. So the yutz figures the difference between what my bed was at the discounted rate of $2159 and tells me that I'm getting a $360 refund. I told him he was out of his mind and that the bed was $2300 and I wanted the difference between $2300 and $1800 and that I wanted the 10% on top of it. He sat there and argued with me and told me that the 10% discount could not be combined with any other coupon, and wouldn't give it to me. I had to explain that it wasn't a coupon that I was looking to use to get the $1800 price, it was the advertised price!!! I was told the 10% discount was for being referred there (even though I wasn't, the sales guy was really nice). So I told the yutz that if I had purchased the bed today, at the advertised price, and not on Friday, I would still be entitled to the 10% referral discount on top of it. He actually had the balls to tell me that I was making out better either way, and I couldn't just get all the discounts I wanted - that I was getting a discount by bringing in the ad and that I couldn't get everything. He finally had to call the other salesman and ask him. Needless to say, I won that battle.
Then, the yutz has the nerve to ignore my wishes as a customer. He tells me that he's going to refund the difference to my credit card. I told him I'd rather apply it to the outstanding rate that I was financing. He tells me it's easier to refund the credit card (which is actually a debit card and the money is already out of my account, and I'd rather leave it that way than have to owe more in the end). So at first I went along with it. Then, when he pissed me off with the discount thing and he was on the phone with the other salesman, he was telling him to credit my card, and I said to him, "You know, I'd really much rather have the difference applied to my outstanding balance." I must have told him 4 times while he was on the phone, and he blatantly ignored me and kept telling the other guy to refund my card. When he hung up, I told him that I wanted it applied towards my balance. I said, "I'm sorry if it's easier for you to just refund my card, but it's easier for me to have less to owe in the future, and I'm the customer! My money has been taken out of my account already and if it's just going to be going back to you, you might as well just leave it the way it is and apply the rest to my financing." Then he sits there and tells me that the paperwork on my financing won't even go to the financing company until after the bed was delivered. HELLO??? All the more reason to just write up a new financing paper and submit that instead of having to readjust it after it's submitted.
I then had to spend another five minutes explaining to the yutz why I wanted him to give me some sort of receipt or authorization or something to guarantee that the new amount that he hand wrote on my receipt was going to be honored. He told me that the other salesman knew about it and was putting it in the computer, but I had to explain to him that I don't have access to his computers and couldn't verify that I was going to get this taken care of. He gave me the hardest time about putting his initials and employee number next to the new price. I told him anyone could just say that I wrote that in there and decide to screw me over.
I eventually walked out of there with almost $600 in savings, but he truly didn't comprehend the whole idea of customer service and competency!

Re: Beds are friggen expensive!!! UPDATED with a new vent! UPDATED AGAIN WITH EVEN MORE CRAP!
So there's more crap that Sleepy's has dumped on me! The guy was supposed to call me on Monday to tell me whether the bed would be in stock and they would be able to deliver it on time to me or I would need to order a new bed. I called Monday afternoon, and was told he was off. Why he would tell me that he would call me if he was off, I have no idea. So Tuesday, I call and ask for him, and they tell me that he's not in that store today. I left a message and they contacted him and he called me back. Said the bed was in and would be delivered on Wednesday. I asked (as I had several times when I was there last Friday) if it would be delivered after 5 pm, and he said yes, but it was not 100% guaranteed.
Yesterday, I check the website and it says that my bed is scheduled for delivery between 1 and 5 pm!!! I call Sleepy's and the automated system says the same thing. I get someone on the phone and they tell me that I'm scheduled for 1 to 5. They said that since I didn't pay the extra fee for the guaranteed delivery time, it was just an estimate and they try to accommodate requests but can't guarantee it. The woman I was working with was really nice and the end result (after a 20 minute phone conversation) was that she was going to reschedule me for a guaranteed delivery time today after 5, at no extra charge. Great, finally some help.
Well, yet again, Sleepy's screwed up!! The bed is here, but they brought me two different size box springs! One is a good inch and a half to 2 inches thicker than the other one. Not to mention that the bed itself is higher than it was in the showroom...I can't touch the floor with my feet when I sit on the edge of the bed and our night tables are at least 4 inches lower than the friggen bed! I had to have the delivery people wait around while I called someone and rectify the situation. So tonight, FH and I are sleeping on an uneven bed (I shoved a comforter under the boxspring on his side to even it out) and they are supposed to deliver a new one during the day tomorrow (luckily I took the day off). I am so fed up with this damn bed! (OK, I love the bed, even in its gargantuan-ness, but the service has sucked shriveled little moose balls!)
I'm going to write a nice, long letter to the corporate headquarters and let me tell you, if they do not do something to make me happy, I'm going to hurt someone!
