BTDT MOMS/AND THOSE TTC.......... A question

as you know im reading loads of books lately........... I was curious if your DH while you were trying to conceive, smoked cigarettes or cigars????

I called my DR to ask if this is problematic but she wont be in till tomorrow night. I read both partners should not smoke and should stop two months prior... those of you who gave birth already to your healthy little ones did any of your husbands smoke regularly or Occassionally? DH only smokes usually none to one or two cigars a week and I was curious if I should MAKE him stop


eta: THOSE ttc as well if any of their DH occassionally smoke at all

I don't know. I never heard of that. My husband doesn't smoke.
But I do know people whose husbands do smoke and had babies.

Sue- did they have delivery problems or any problems w/ the babies? or were the babies perfectly healthy?

but you never know! its not like he smokes a lot of them but I wonder if one or two a week is too much?

Well actually one of them had to stay in the hospital for a few days. I don't remember why.

my dad has battled smoking his whole life (he quits pretty frequently), but he was a smoker when we were conceived and delivered. No issues/problems at all - we were all healthy.

On the other hand, one of my good friends suffers from weak lungs (gets bronchotis all the time, low lung capacity, etc) because her mom smoked while pregnant.

I know people do not "inhale" cigars but they inhale the second hand smoke of them I heard

I know several people who smoked and had perfectly healthy children. Years ago they didn't know that it was so bad for you.

Sue- the book seems to say it can lower fertility and sperm count
and could possible affect the baby
but more on the fertility issues....

Yes, the kid is fine. But I remember when he was first born, he had to stay a few days in the hospital. I don't think it was related to his father smoking though. It may have been his sugar level but I don't remember. It was several years ago.

tammyjill: If thats what you read,then it can't hurt to ask DH to stop. He will be doing his health a favor as well. Talk to the doctor about any concerns you have.

Steve smokes like a chimney and we got pregnant on our first try. He never smoked near me when I was preggo. He goes outside to smoke, he also never smokes anywhere near Damien I wish he would quit

Smoking cigarettes or cigars can cause cancer and other life threatening illnesses. It is also an addiction, like any other drug. If people do not quit when they see their own loved one battle cancer, or when the prices go up and up, then I doubt they will quit anyway. You can tell your DH that you want him to quit so that he has a better chance of seeing his own grandchildren someday or for being around when you retire, but he probably already knows that. I will say that smoking around the baby or in the house AT ALL is NOT good for a baby or for you, for that matter. So if he doesn't stop, he will have to only smoke outside, in the cold/rain/heat etc...Maybe that is a good arguement.

Michele- he always smokes outside and not often I was thinking though he should smoke never from what I read
I know its not healthy but now I read of fertility issues...

From what I read it doesn't really matter what the man does. He can drink and smoke. Its a woman's body that can effect the baby's health.

I read quite a bit myself to help tie me over until we were both ready to ttc.

My Dh does not smoke, but I've read the same concerns about drinking. My Dh will drink a few beers once a week, and I began to worry about it a little.

I decided that I wouldn't obsess over it, and bought him some multivitamin to make me feel a little better. If we find that we're having trouble conceiving, then I might work on him.

I wouldn't make an issue over a few cigars a week, and just try to have fun trying

My husband smokes ALOT and I got on him to cut down which he didn't do and we got pregnant without any problem as you already know.

Like Stacey, Joe smoked the whole pregnancy (and on the way to the hospital) and still smokes. He doesn't smoke in the house -- he goes outside -- and he doesn't smoke around Gianna either.

So Tammy in answer to your question, in my case, it didn't affect the baby at all -- she was/is perfectly healthy!

I have read and do know (from some of my friends who this happened to) that if someone smokes around the baby, they can end up with asthma. But nobody should EVER smoke around a baby in my opinion.
